This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the RRK Series Radiating Rib Splice System, an EPDM insulated connector for electrical conductors, ensuring a flood-seal connection. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules.
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
EPDM rubber sleeve, Electrical conductors, RRK Series connector, Grease
- Prepare the EPDM Sleeve
Slide the EPDM rubber sleeve onto one of the conductors. If there is excess grease on the conductor, move it to the conductor insulation for later use in Step 4.
- Strip Cable Ends
Strip the ends of the cables according to the following lengths: #2 to 2/0 cable size requires 1-1/2 inches; 3/0 to 4/0 cable size requires 2-1/4 inches; 250 to 350 mcm cable size requires 2-1/2 inches; and 500 mcm cable size requires 2-3/4 inches.
- Insert and Crimp Conductors
Insert the stripped conductors into the RRK Series connector. Crimp the connector using the recommended dies marked on the connector. For 3/0 and 4/0 sizes, begin crimping 5/8 inch from the end and do not crimp at the very end.
- Spread Excess Grease
Spread any excess grease, including any saved from Step 1, over the crimped connector to ensure a complete seal.
- Position EPDM Sleeve
Slide the EPDM rubber sleeve over the crimped connection until it locks firmly into position. Visually inspect the sleeve; a properly installed sleeve will show only one 'hump'.
