How to Install the R2T35M 35kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 35kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination specifically for tape shield cables in indoor/outdoor applications. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized and follow high voltage safety practices throughout the installation to prevent serious injury or product damage.
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Crimping tool, Soldering iron, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer, if needed), Scissors or utility knife
Supplies needed:
R2T35M Termination Kit (includes silicone rubber termination halves, lubricant, gray silicone rubber electrical tape, constant force spring, preformed ground braid, sealing mastic, copper foil tape, gloves), Vinyl tape, Terminal lug or connector (compatible with cable), Approved solvent, Semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotch No. 13, if cable has cloth or paper semi-con shield)
- Prepare the Cable
De-energize all apparatus before beginning. Verify the cable size fits within the termination's insulation range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-conductive layer, and insulation according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install the Ground Braid
Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it 50%. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield once, trim any excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the braid. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If using cloth or paper semi-conductive insulation shield, overwrap it with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Check that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with approved solvent-saturated pads, taking care not to let the solvent touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive material is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield, and ensure not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is smaller than the cable primary insulation, build up the tape band to equal the insulation diameter. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease. For the lower termination with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body, not the core, butts against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal. If installing a second housing, pull its core down within one coil of the bottom, slide it over the cable, and carefully pull the core counter-clockwise, overlapping the first termination by 1-1/2 inches (40mm).
- Complete Termination Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
