How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination (R2T15J2)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination (R2T15J2) for indoor/outdoor applications on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Solvent applicator (e.g., clean cloth), Gloves
Supplies needed:
Silicone Rubber Termination (R2T15J2), Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Approved solvent, Vinyl tape or binding wire, Connector or Lug (compatible with cable), Silicone grease, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Before starting, ensure the cable size fits within the kit range. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions for the cable jacket, mastic, neutral wires, semi-conductor, and conductor length, accounting for the terminal lug depth and any growth during crimping of aluminum lugs. For concentric neutral cables, bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire.
- Apply Mastic Seals to Cable Jacket
Using a 50% stretch, carefully wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end. Position the mastic precisely as it serves as a marker for the terminator; cut it flush without overlapping. Next, apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires (if applicable) and the previously applied mastic, again using a 50% stretch and cutting flush without overlapping. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension from the jacket end.
- Install the Lug or Connector
If using a lug or connector that will not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug onto the prepared conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with an approved solvent. Exercise caution to prevent the solvent from touching the semi-conductor insulation shield. If an abrasive is necessary, use it only on the insulation, not the semi-conductor shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.
- Install the Termination Body
First, create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, do not exceed two layers of tape. If the barrel diameter is smaller, build up the tape to match the insulation diameter. Next, cover the edge of the semi-conductor insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body is firmly butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal and avoid pushing or pulling the termination assembly during core removal.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but avoid lubricating the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Finally, twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
