Suggested Welding Guide for ELASTIMOLD Apparatus Bushings and Bushing Wells
This guide provides suggested recommendations for welding ELASTIMOLD apparatus bushings and bushing wells, focusing on minimizing heat to maintain epoxy integrity. The provided document does not contain specific instructions for K675S1.

No. 308 bare stainless steel wire, Copper heat sinks, Thermally conductive paste
- Prepare and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check contents of the package to ensure completeness and undamaged components. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the product is supplied with a protective shipping cover(s), remove it and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Set Up Welding Environment
Ensure all surfaces (tank, bushing, and bushing well) are clean, free from contamination like paint or grease, to prevent extended welding time and temperature increase. Position copper heat sinks to minimize heat flow to the epoxy; water-cooled heat sinks are suggested, or air cool non-water cooled heat sinks after removal. Apply thermally conductive paste at the face of heat sinks in contact with the flange and cover. Provide venting for heat sinks. Do not thread heat sinks to the bushing or bushing well stud. Ensure a clearance of 3/16" ± 1/16" between the epoxy shank and the mounting hole. The enclosure cover thickness must be 1/4" maximum. Ensure the oil level covering the immersed stud connection is greater than 2 inches. Observe critical clearances from the apparatus connection to enclosure stiffeners and adjacent ground planes.
- Perform Welding with Heat Control
Use either Inert-gas, tungsten-arc welding (TIG) or Short-arc welding (metal inert-gas, MIG) processes, as both are fast and create minimum heat. Use No. 308 bare stainless steel wire with either process. Keep heat to a minimum during welding; the visible heat line should not be greater than 1/8" from the weld and 3/16" from the O.D. of the flange. Minimize air currents in the welding area to avoid disturbing the gas atmosphere. The bottom heat sink should be of a larger diameter than the top to absorb heat rather than allowing it to flow into the tank. Monitor temperatures at points indicated by curved arrows (e.g., near the epoxy) using thermocouple detectors to ensure they do not exceed 225°F.
- Handle Post-Welding and Cure
Minimize forces applied to the heated stud and flange during handling techniques before and after welding. After welding, if using non-water cooled heat sinks, air cool the bushing after removal of the heat sink. Do not apply any torque to the epoxy when making bus bar connections. If the equipment surface finish requires thermal baking to cure, the bake sequence must not exceed 130°F or 8 hours to prevent damage to critical sealing aspects of the bushings. Additionally, the bushing metallic contacts should not be mechanically loaded internally or externally during this cure process to prevent epoxy distortion.
