How to Install K675CPS Deadbreak Plug and Well Products
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and voltage testing of K675CPS 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well products, including mating with elbows or bushing extensions.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (do not substitute)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and that all components fit correctly. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare and Lubricate Components
Remove any protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600 amp mating interface is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the 600 amp interface on the plug or well. Lubricate both the elbow and its mating part as indicated with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Ensure all surfaces of the elbow and mating parts remain clean.
- Connect Plug or Well to Mating Part
Carefully push the plug or well into the elbow or bushing extension until the threads engage properly. Ensure a firm and secure connection.
- Torque Tighten Connection
For an insulating plug, use a torque wrench and tighten, exerting 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. For a connector plug, tap plug, or tap well, use a torque wrench with an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench; the indicated torque should be from 40 to 48 foot-pounds. For K651 and 750 rubber connecting plugs, refer to special instructions IS-0915.
- Secure Insulating Plug Cap (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down hard until it snaps firmly into place.
- Perform Voltage Test
Perform a voltage test. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. After testing, clean, lubricate the cap with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
