How to Install 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 15/25/35kV 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Plug and Well Products, including connection and voltage testing procedures.
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD® 600SW spanner wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Plug or Well product, Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Silicone lubricant, Elbow or Bushing Extension (mating part)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and all components fit correctly. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Plug/Well and Mating Interface
Remove any protective caps from the plug or well product. If the 600amp mating interface is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud (supplied with elbow/bushing extension) into the 600amp interface on the plug or well. Thoroughly lubricate both the elbow and its mating part with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Ensure all surfaces of the elbow and mating parts are clean before proceeding.
- Connect the Plug/Well to the Mating Part
Carefully push the plug or well product into the elbow or bushing extension. Ensure the threads engage properly as you make the connection.
- Torque Tighten the Connection
Use a torque wrench to tighten the connection. If installing an insulating plug, apply 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque. If installing a connector plug, tap plug, or tap well, use an ELASTIMOLD® 600SW spanner wrench and apply an indicated torque of 40 to 48 foot-pounds. Refer to special instructions IS-0915 for K651 and 750 rubber connecting plugs.
- Install the Voltage Detection Cap (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone lubricant. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps securely into place.
- Perform Voltage Test
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a hotstick to remove the test point cap, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. Test with a suitable sensing device, following its manufacturer's directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
