How to Install K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (optional), Lubricant, Stud prepack, Vinyl plastic tape (if applicable), Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Ground wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Silicone grease, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. If supplied with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable for Connection
Position the cable with sufficient slack and unwind concentric neutral wires if applicable. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the mating product's centerline. Clean the outer cable surface for 24” (610mm). Prepare the cable jacket and shield according to its type: remove outer jacket to 12 3/4” (324mm), fold back shield wires, or remove specific tape/corrugated shields to specified dimensions (e.g., 10 3/4” (273mm)). If using UNISHIELD or lead sheath cable, refer to 10TL adapter instructions. Remove semi-con shield to 9 3/4” (248mm) to 10 3/4” (273mm) without nicking insulation.
- Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor
Bevel the cable insulation end at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the tape marker. Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the cable adapter end, ensuring the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8”–4 11/16” (111mm–119mm). Do not nick the cable adapter or conductor.
- Crimp Compression Lug
Insert the conductor fully into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion). Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6 1/2” (165mm)). Crimp the lug according to its instructions, starting the first crimp away from the cable adapter. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6 1/2”–7 1/4” (165mm–184mm).
- Install Elbow and Prepare Mating Parts
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it stops, ensuring the adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. If needed, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and mating part surfaces.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Parts
Push the elbow onto the primary mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Ground Cable Shield
If using an insulating plug, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and snap it onto the elbow. Insert a No. 14 AWG Copper wire through the grounding eye, form a loop, and connect to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation)
Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
