Overview

The ABB K656LRTP-N0410-DRG is a 600 Amp, 25kV Deadbreak Stick-Op Connector Kit with Test Point, designed for safe and efficient electrical connections in high-voltage power distribution and transmission systems. This kit features a deadbreak design, allowing direct testing and grounding without cable movement, ensuring operational safety and reduced downtime. The Stick-Op mechanism provides an external visible break via hotstick removal of the elbow, meeting ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements for 25kV voltage class. Key specifications include a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 15.2kV, phase-to-phase voltage of 26.3kV, and a 125kV BIL impulse withstand rating (1.2 x 50 microsecond wave). The connector supports continuous current ratings of 600 Amps and momentary ratings of 25kA symmetrical for 10 cycles. It accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.550 inches to 1.780 inches, making it compatible with 1000 AWG compressed stranded aluminum conductors. The kit includes an insulated cap for enhanced safety and protection, a test point for diagnostic capabilities, and an aluminum compression lug for secure terminations. Constructed from peroxide-cured EPDM molded rubber with an all-copper current path, this connector ensures durability and reliable performance in demanding environments. The hex-broach design facilitates torque-controlled installation, reducing the risk of improper assembly. Applications include power distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, and other high-voltage apparatus where deadfront construction and reduced space requirements are critical. The Stick-Op design simplifies maintenance and testing procedures, making it ideal for utility, industrial, and commercial installations requiring high-voltage connectivity.

How to Install and Configure 656/676LR and K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

Install, prepare, and connect 656/676LR and K656/K676LR deadbreak elbow connectors on compatible high-voltage cable systems. This guide covers cable preparation, lug crimping, elbow assembly, grounding, mating connections, and voltage testing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Cable stripper, Knife or jacket removal tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing meter for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

656/676LR or K656/K676LR elbow connector kit, Compression lug, Cable adapter, Insulating plug or mating part as required, Lubricant, Stud prepack/threaded stud, Ground wire (No. 14 AWG copper or equivalent ampacity), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape marker, Tape retainer, Silicone grease, Grounding connector

  1. Verify safety and inspect all parts

De-energize all apparatus before starting. Read the full instructions, inspect every component for damage and compatibility, and confirm that all required tools and supplies are available and clean. Do not install or remove parts on energized equipment.

  2. Position and cut the cable

Position the cable in its final location with enough slack to remove the elbows later. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires, then cut the cable 1-3/4 in. (45 mm) from the center line of the mating product.

  3. Prepare the cable jacket and shield

Clean the cable outer surface for 24 in. (610 mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. Remove the outer jacket and shield materials according to the cable type: fold back shield wires, remove or tape flat metallic tape shield, install tape retainer and marker for fabric tape shield, remove longitudinally corrugated shield and apply tape marker, or remove semi-con shield without nicking the insulation. If using UNISHIELD or lead sheath cable, use the required 10TL cable shield adapter

  4. Bevel, clean, and install the cable adapter

Bevel the cable insulation end at a 45-degree angle about 1/4 in. (6 mm) back. Clean and lubricate the insulation, working toward the semi-con shield, then install the cable adapter small end first until it is flush with the tape marker.

  5. Trim the conductor and attach the compression lug

Cut the protruding insulation even with the end of the cable adapter without nicking the adapter or conductor. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4-3/8 to 4-11/16 in. (111 to 119 mm). Insert the conductor into the compression lug, wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion, measure the check dimension, and crimp the lug per the lug instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor after crimping.

  6. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Push the elbow onto the adapter until it can advance no farther, confirm the adapter remains flush with the tape marker, and remove the tape marker.

  7. Connect the elbow to the mating part

Remove protective caps, install the threaded stud if needed, and clean and lubricate both mating surfaces. Push the elbow onto the mating part, align the compression lug hole with the stud, then insert the opposite mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part to the value specified by the mating-part instructions.

  8. Install the insulating plug or voltage detection cap

If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap, place it on the elbow, and press firmly until it snaps into place. Treat the elbow as energized until voltage testing confirms otherwise.

  9. Ground the shield and waterproof the jacket

Insert a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG copper through the grounding eye, twist it into a small loop without damaging the eye, and connect it to ground with a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield using the grounding device instructions or an alternate approved method, and waterproof the cable jacket to help prevent moisture entry.

  10. Perform the voltage test and restore the cap

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use only a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone grease and reinstall it on the test point.
