How to Install K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and preparation of 600-ampere or 900-ampere deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating products.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points, Suitable connector for grounding wire
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug, Lubricant, Stud prepack, Tape marker, Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Ground wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Protective caps, Threaded stud, Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating products. Read all installation instructions completely before starting the procedure.
- Position and Prepare Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to 12 3/4” (324mm). Fold back shield wires. For flat metallic tape, remove and secure with vinyl tape to 10 3/4” (273mm). For fabric tape, remove and install retainer/marker to 9 3/4” (248mm) and 10 3/4” (273mm). For corrugated shield, remove and install marker flush to 10 3/4” (273mm). For semi-con shield, remove and install marker to 9 3/4” (248mm) and 10 3/4” (273mm). Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove protruding cable insulation even with adapter. Exposed conductor length must be 4 3/8” to 4 11/16” (111mm to 119mm). For aluminum, wire brush conductor immediately. Fully insert conductor into compression lug. Measure “Check Dimension” (< 6 1/2” (165mm)). Crimp lug per instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor. Verify lug to adapter distance is 6 1/2” to 7 1/4” (165mm to 184mm) after crimping.
- Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it doesn't have one. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud.
- Connect Opposite Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. If using an insulating plug, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to instructions for any grounding device used, or via an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)
Remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until “no voltage” is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean, lubricate cap with silicone grease, and replace it on the test point.
