How to Install 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation, cable preparation, and connection of 655/675LR and K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors, designed for fully shielded, fully submersible deadfront cable connections to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Torque wrench (for mating parts and L-Kits)

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (optional), Lubricant (silicone type), Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), Tape marker, Wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity for grounding), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), Grounding device (optional), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (to replace shipping covers)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Part Inspection

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, proper fit with cable, and compatibility with mating products. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.

  2. Prepare Cable for Elbow Removal Clearance

Assemble the cable in its final position, ensuring enough slack for adequate clearance to remove the elbows. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  3. Clean Cable Outer Surface

Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.

  4. Prepare Cable End for Connector

Follow the specific cable preparation instructions for your cable type. If using a 20MA or 21MA grounding device or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their supplied instructions. For UNISHIELD* or LEAD SHEATH cable, use a 10TL cable shield adapter and its instructions. For jacketed and non-jacketed cable, remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable as shown in the diagrams, exposing insulation, semi-con shield, and shield wires/tape at specified lengths (9-3/4”, 10-3/4”, 12-3/4” from the tape marker).

  5. Bevel, Clean, Lubricate, and Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  6. Trim Cable Insulation and Verify Conductor Length

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Exercise caution not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify that the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  7. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 6-3/8 inches (162mm) or the assembly must be redone. Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. After crimping, wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  8. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  9. Prepare Mating Products

DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part, if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.

  10. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  11. Connect Opposite End of Elbow

Clean and lubricate the mating part intended for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the specific instructions supplied with that mating part.

  12. Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. Proceed to the voltage test directions.

  13. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with your grounding device, or use an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.

  14. Torque 600amp L-Kit Components (If Applicable)

CAUTION: If constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque as per the instructions provided with the kit.

  15. Perform Voltage Test: Remove Test Point Cap

Remove the test point cap from the ELASTIMOLD® deadbreak elbow connector using a hotstick. When removing the cap, peel it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly.

  16. Perform Voltage Test: Measure for Energization

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means.

  17. Perform Voltage Test: Replace Test Point Cap

After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant. Replace the cap securely on the test point.
