How to Install 656/676LR and K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation of 656/676LR and K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Utility knife or cable preparation tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

656/676LR or K656/K676LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Tape marker, Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone grease, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket, recommended), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal of parts. Ensure all deadbreak connectors are de-energized before operation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious injury or death. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools readily available and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Position Cable and Prepare for Cutting

Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. If using concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  3. Clean Cable Outer Surface

Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.

  4. Prepare Cable Outer Jacket and Shield

Remove the cable's outer jacket to the specified dimension (12 3/4 inches or 324mm). Prepare the cable shield according to its type: fold back shield wires, remove flat metallic tape shield and secure with vinyl tape (10 3/4 inches or 273mm), remove fabric tape shield and install tape retainer/marker (9 3/4 inches or 248mm for retainer, 10 3/4 inches or 273mm for marker), remove longitudinally corrugated shield and install tape marker (10 3/4 inches or 273mm), or remove semi-con shield and install tape marker (9 3/4 inches or 248mm for shield, 10 3/4 inches or 273mm for marker). For UNISHIELD* or lead sheath cables, refer to 10TL cable shield adapter instructions.

  5. Bevel and Clean Cable Insulation, Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  6. Prepare Conductor Length

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8 inches to 4 11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm). Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor.

  7. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 6 1/2 inches or 165mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug following the supplied instructions. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is 6 1/2 inches to 7 1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm) after crimping.

  8. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  9. Prepare Mating Products

DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.

  10. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions.

  11. Install Insulating Plug (if applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow. Push down firmly until the cap snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage. Follow VOLTAGE TEST directions below.

  12. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device or via an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (if required)

CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, tighten each component to specified torque per instructions provided. To perform a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
