How to Install Elastimold Deadbreak Elbow Connectors (655/675LR & K655/K675LR)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR series deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, connector assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Cable stripping tool, Knife or beveling tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable capacitive voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector (655/675LR or K655/K675LR), Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (if used), Lubricant (silicone lubricant), Threaded stud (if mating part not equipped), Tape marker, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable ground connector, Waterproofing material, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspection
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the package contents and all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare the Cable
Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm). Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable by removing the semi-con shield and insulation to the specific lengths indicated in the product diagrams (e.g., 9-3/4”, 10-3/4”, 12-3/4” from the end).
- Install the Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Compression Lug
Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4” and 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm); do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the “Check Dimension” before crimping (it must be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe off all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).
- Install the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect to Mating Products
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud. For the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate the mating part, then insert it into the elbow. Engage the threads, hand tighten, and torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions. If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop; do not damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions for a grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Perform Voltage Test (Safety Verification)
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable capacitive sensing device, following its manufacturer's directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
