How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus on 15kV and 25kV class systems.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector (K655/K675LR), Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Lubricant (silicone type for test point cap), Threaded Stud (if mating part requires it), Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Do not touch or move energized products. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable insulation and semi-con shield to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-3/4”, 10-3/4”, 12-3/4” from the cut end, depending on cable type).

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Compression Lug

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the cable adapter end, ensuring the exposed conductor is 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). Insert the conductor into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors first). Crimp the lug according to its instructions, then wipe off excess inhibitor. The lug-to-adapter distance after crimping should be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).

  4. Install the Elbow

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  5. Connect to Mating Products

DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it's not equipped with one. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow, insert it, engage threads, hand tighten, and then torque according to its instructions. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate its voltage detection cap and snap it onto the elbow.

  6. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions for any grounding device used, or an alternate method if none. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  7. Perform Voltage Test

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
