How to Install K656I Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and assembly of K656I Deadbreak Receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, and final connection for high voltage applications.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16” socket, Wire brush, Assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT), Rag, Wire strippers, Safety solvent
Supplies needed:
K656I Receptacle housing, Cable adapter, I Center section, Aluminum holding collar, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connector, Belleville washer, Flat washer, Nylon venting rod, Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable, Electrical tape, ECS grounding device (optional), No. 14 AWG copper wire
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components are rated and compatible with mating parts and cable. Check threads by threading a probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Position Initial Components
Wipe the cable's outer jacket clean for a distance of 38 inches from the end, ensuring the cable end is cut squarely. If an ECS grounding device is being used, slide its tube 38 inches onto the cable. Next, slide the receptacle housing 30 inches onto the cable. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, measure 13-3/4 inches from the cable end and remove the cable jacket with a straight, smooth cut, taking care not to damage the neutral wires. Bend the neutral wires back and out of the way.
- Remove Semi-con Shield and Bevel Insulation
From the end of the cable, measure 10-1/4 inches and remove the semi-con shield from the insulation with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. At a point 1 inch from the end of the semi-con shield, wrap two turns of tape to serve as a marker. Bevel the end of the insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch back.
- Clean Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Apply supplied lubricant sparingly along the cable as shown in the documentation. Lubricate the inside of the cable adapter. Slide the adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until the end of the adapter is flush with the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Secure Retaining Ring
Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of exposed conductor should be 4 3/4 to 5 inches; if not, redo the assembly. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor and snug it firmly against the cable adapter. Using the provided hex wrench, tighten the socket head screw hand tight. Confirm the exposed conductor measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches; if not, redo the assembly.
- Install and Crimp the Connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it is over 7 inches, do not proceed and redo all previous work. Prior to crimping, confirm components are positioned correctly and bolt holes in the crimp connectors align with the mating part. Crimp the connectors following their specific instructions, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if over 7 inches, redo previous work.
- Assemble Washers and Torque Bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the bolt. The splice and cables are now in their final positions; do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after bolts are tightened. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs.
- Lubricate and Fully Install Receptacle Housing
Apply supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the area of the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod. Using either the 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool, slowly slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. Remove the venting rod. WARNING: DO NOT place hand on threaded rod or guide shaft with the assembly tool in place.
- Complete Grounding Connections
Complete the installation of any ECS grounding device according to its included instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye, and connect it to ground.
