How to Install K656 Series Deadbreak Receptacles

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K656CY, K656CH, and K656I Deadbreak Receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, and final assembly for high-voltage applications.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), 650ATY or 600RRT assembly tool, Rag, Crimp tool, Cable stripping tools

Supplies needed:

K656 Series Receptacle housing, Cable adapters, I, Wye, or H Center section, Aluminum holding collars, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Hex-head bolts, Crimp connectors, Belleville washers, Flat washers, Nylon venting rod, ECS grounding device (if used), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) for grounding, Tape (for markers), Conductive copper strip (for flat metallic tape shielded cable), Approved safety solvent, Solid dielectric type cables (15kV or 25kV, 600A)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all K656 series components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts and cables. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 38 inches and cut the cable end squarely. Based on your cable type, follow the specific preparation instructions: For Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable, remove the jacket 13-3/4 inches, bend neutral wires, remove semi-con 10-1/4 inches, mark with tape 1 inch from semi-con end, bevel insulation 1/4 inch at 45 degrees, and thoroughly clean the insulation. For Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable with Semi-con Shield, remove the outer jacket 13-3/4 inches, remove tape shield 11-1/4 inches, wrap with conductive copper strip and tape marker, remove semi-con shield 10-1/4 inches, bevel insulation 1/4 inch at 45 degrees, and thoroughly clean the insulation.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Holding Ring

Apply lubricant sparingly along the prepared cable and generously to the inside of the cable adapter. Slide the cable adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until its end is flush with the tape marker. Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring the exposed conductor measures 4 3/4 to 5 inches. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor, snug it firmly against the cable adapter, and hand-tighten the socket head screw using the provided hex wrench. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches.

  4. Prepare and Insert Crimp Connector

Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it exceeds 7 inches (17.8cm), redo previous work. Confirm the bolt holes in the crimp connectors are positioned properly to align with the bolt holes of the mating part.

  5. Crimp the Connectors

Crimp the connectors according to the instructions provided with the connectors, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it exceeds 7 inches, redo previous work. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for all remaining cables to be joined.

  6. Assemble and Torque Bolts

Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten all bolts. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.

  7. Lubricate and Slide Receptacle Housing

Apply the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the area of the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod.

  8. Complete Housing Assembly with Tool

Use an assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT) to slide the receptacle housing over the splice section. If using the 650ATY, attach it with the 'U' shaped yoke over the splice section and the 'C' shaped yoke over the receptacle housing, then slowly raise the handle. If using the 600RRT, attach it and slide the housing by turning the hex nut. WARNING: Do not place hands on the threaded rod or guide shaft with the 600RRT tool in place. Remove the venting rod once the housing is in place. Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for all remaining cables.

  9. Final Checks and Grounding

Check all cable adapters to ensure they are located properly and remove all vinyl tape markers. If an ECS grounding device is being used, complete its installation according to its instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings, making a small loop and twisting tightly without damaging the eye, then connect to ground.
