How to Install 655/656/675/676CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 655/656/675/676CETP deadbreak elbow connectors, ensuring fully shielded and submersible cable connections for 15kV class systems. Always de-energize apparatus before installation.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), Crimping tool (per lug instructions), Torque wrench (600AT or 600ATM assembly tool), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Cable adapter, Compression lug, Lubricant (supplied), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Silicone grease (for test point cap)
- Prepare the Cable Position
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to the dimension shown in the product documentation (typically 9 3/4 or 10 3/4 inches). Fold back shield wires. Depending on your cable type (Flat Metallic Tape, Fabric Tape, Longitudinally Corrugated, Semi-con), remove the shield and secure it with vinyl plastic tape, or install a tape retainer and tape marker as specified. If using UNISHIELD® or lead sheath cable, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Install Compression Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm); redo if incorrect. For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 6 1/2 inches (165mm)). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug, locating the first crimp on the end towards the cable adapter. Wipe off all excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm); redo if incorrect.
- Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Use the appropriate assembly tool (600AT for products dated Sep 30, 2013 or earlier, or 600ATM for products dated Oct 1, 2013 or later) to engage the hex broach in the contact assembly. Insert the contact assembly into the elbow interface to engage the stud. Torque the contact assembly to 19-25 ft/lbs (600AT) or 50-60 ft/lbs (600ATM), ensuring not to exceed 60 ft/lbs.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a grounding wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device used, or via an alternate method if no device is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test (656CETP only)
Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. For 656CETP connectors, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
