How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug for High Voltage Cable Connections
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, including cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to a mating ELASTIMOLD receptacle on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Approved solvent, Rag, Nylon rod (supplied), ELASTIMOLD bail (required)
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Lubricant (supplied), Solid dielectric type cable, Mating ELASTIMOLD receptacle, Silicone grease, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent)
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Read all instructions thoroughly and have required tools ready. If supplied with a protective shipping cover, remove it and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before energizing.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. Follow specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if used.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield (1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable). Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. Install an ECS or MA grounding device if applicable.
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may harm the product or its mating part.
- Install Plug onto Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect Grounding Device
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
