How to Install K655SR/M655SR Deadbreak Straight Receptacle

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K655SR and M655SR Deadbreak Straight Receptacles, connecting an in-line cable to an ANSI-386 600 amp bushing.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

5/8-11 tap, Hex wrench, Wire brush, Torque wrench with 15/16 socket, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Crimp tool

Supplies needed:

Receptacle housing, Bushing adapter, Cable adapter, Aluminum holding collar, Hex head bolt, Crimp connector, Belleville washer, Flat washer, Nylon venting rod, Lubricants (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Brass bolt, Bushing converter contact, Loctite, Tape marker, No. 14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Suitable connector for neutral/grounding wires, Hose clamp (M655SR for 35kV only)

  1. Prepare and Install Bushing Converter

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. If a stud is present in the apparatus bushing, remove it and re-tap the hole using a 5/8-11 tap. Clean and lubricate the apparatus bushing and bushing converter interface. Assemble the bushing converter onto the apparatus bushing. Apply 3-4 drops of Loctite to the threads of the brass bolt. Assemble the contact adapter to the apparatus bushing, ensuring the bolt hole faces out, using the 5/8” brass bolt. Torque the brass bolt to 60 ft.-lbs.

  2. Prepare Cable End

Train the cable end and straighten it into its final position. Cut the cable squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth.

  3. Manage Concentric Neutral Wires

If applicable, unwrap the concentric neutral wires a distance of 30 inches (76 cm). Do not cut these wires; instead, bend and fold them back out of the way.

  4. Clean Cable Outer Jacket

Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 38 inches (96.5 cm) or up to the concentric neutral wires.

  5. Position Receptacle Housing

Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable for a distance of 30 inches (76 cm).

  6. Prepare Semi-Con Shield

Carefully remove the semi-con shield from the cable. Install a tape marker to indicate the dimensions of 10-1/4 inches (26.04 cm) to 11-1/4 inches (28.58 cm) for the shield removal. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable insulation during this process.

  7. Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  8. Expose Conductor

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Exercise caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4 3/4 inches (12.06 cm) and 5 inches (12.7 cm); if not, redo the previous assembly steps.

  9. Secure Holding Collar

Position the holding collar over the conductor, ensuring it is flush against the cable adapter. Use the supplied hex wrench to tighten the setscrew securely.

  10. Insert Conductor into Crimp Connector

Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately insert it into the crimp connector, which contains an inhibitor. Ensure the conductor is fully inserted into the crimp barrel. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it exceeds 7 inches (17.8 cm), stop and redo all previous work.

  11. Verify Component Alignment

Confirm that all components are oriented in the correct sequence: Receptacle Housing, Cable Adapter, Crimp Connector, and Contact Adapter. Crucially, ensure the bolt hole in the crimp connector is precisely aligned with the bolt hole in the contact adapter.

  12. Crimp Connectors

Crimp the connectors according to the instructions provided with the connectors, rotating each crimp 90 degrees. After crimping, measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar. If this distance is over 7 inches (17.8 cm), do not proceed and redo all previous work.

  13. Secure Connection Bolt

Assemble the washers and bolt in the specified order: place the flat washer against the spade contact, then the Belleville washer with its concave side down, followed by the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the assembly. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 socket, tighten the bolt to 50-60 ft.-lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly once the bolts are tightened.

  14. Lubricate Adapters

Generously apply the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant to the outside of the cable adapter and the designated area of the bushing adapter. Do not substitute lubricants, as unapproved types may harm the product or its mating components.

  15. Seat Receptacle Housing and Ground

Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the supplied nylon venting rod. Slide the receptacle housing onto the bushing converter until it is fully seated, then remove the venting rod. Connect a short piece of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eye of the receptacle housing, forming a small, tightly twisted loop without damaging the eye. Gather the concentric neutral wires and, using a suitable connector, connect them with the grounding wire.

  16. (35kV Only) Secure Hose Clamp

For 35kV applications only, position the hose clamp between the locator bumps on the receptacle housing. Tighten the clamp until an audible click is heard, indicating it is properly secured.
