How to Install the K655/K656/K675/K676ELR Extended Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K655/K656/K675/K676ELR Extended Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus and for splicing/tapping 600-ampere or 900-ampere systems up to 28kV class. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable stripping tools, Measuring tape or ruler, Beveling tool or sharp knife, Cleaning supplies, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Wire strippers/cutters, Hotstick, Capacitance sensing device

Supplies needed:

Tape marker, Silicone grease (lubricant), Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Extension Contact, Flat Washer, Disc Spring, Bolt (for extension contact), Extended Elbow Housing, Threaded Stud (if needed), Insulating Plug (if applicable), Voltage Detection Cap (if insulating plug used), Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Waterproofing material

  1. Prepare the Cable for Installation

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Position the cable in its final assembled position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 10 inches (254mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm). Remove the outer jacket (where applicable) and semi-con shield, then install a tape marker to the specified dimension for your cable type (e.g., 9-3/4 inches, 10-3/4 inches, or 12-3/4 inches). Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.

  2. Install the Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it with silicone grease, working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length MUST BE 4 3/8 to 4 11/16 inches (111mm to 119mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (it MUST BE less than 6 1/2 inches / 165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping MUST BE 6 1/2 to 7 1/4 inches (165mm to 184mm).

  4. Attach the Extension Contact

Attach the extension contact to the compression lug using the flat washer, disc spring, and bolt supplied. Maintain a straight line between the lug and contact, then tighten the bolt to 50-60 foot-pounds torque.

  5. Install the Extended Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with silicone grease. Install the extended elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Connect to Mating Product

DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part, if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with silicone grease, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the extension contact with the stud on the mating part.

  7. Secure the Mating Connection

Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with silicone grease. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.

  8. Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap with silicone grease. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage; follow voltage test directions.

  9. Ground the Cable Shield and Waterproof

Insert one end of a piece of grounding wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through each grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device, or use an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  10. Perform Voltage Test (K656ELR/K676ELR Models)

For K656ELR/K676ELR models, perform a voltage test. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable capacitance sensing device, following its manufacturer’s directions, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
