How to Install 655/675LR and K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and setup of 655/675LR and K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors. These connectors provide fully shielded, fully submersible deadfront cable connections to high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cutting tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Threaded Stud, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone lubricant, Tape marker

  1. Prepare Cable and Work Area

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Shield

Follow the specific cable preparation steps (A, B, or C) that apply to your cable type, referring to separate instructions for grounding devices, jacket cable seals, or UNISHIELD*/LEAD SHEATH cables. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable as shown in the diagrams. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working toward the semi-con shield.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Expose Conductor

Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, taking care not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4” – 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm); if not, redo the assembly.

  4. Install Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 6-3/8”). Crimp the lug following its instructions, starting the first crimp on the end closest to the cable. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm) after crimping; if not, redo the assembly.

  5. Install Elbow and Prepare Mating Products

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further, ensuring the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part surfaces. DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED.

  6. Connect Elbow to Mating Parts

Push the elbow onto the first mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part as per its instructions. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.

  7. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, without damaging the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded, either via a grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)

If performing a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer’s directions. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
