Overview

The ABB K655LR-N0330 is a 600 Amp, 15/25kV deadbreak elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage cable systems in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. This 600 Series component features a fully shielded, dead-front molded rubber housing with a touch-safe insulated plug, aluminum compression lug, stud, and cable adapter, providing a reliable interface for underground and overhead distribution networks. The deadbreak design enables safe connection and disconnection under load without exposing live components, reducing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration. The aluminum compression lug supports conductor sizes from 500 kcmil (compressed/stranded) to 600 kcmil (compact/solid) or 250/300 mm² (compact), accommodating cable insulation diameters between 1.515 inch and 1.780 inch. Compatible with 15kV and 25kV systems, this connector is ideal for use in pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and junction boxes where space and safety are critical. The integrated cable adapter simplifies installation, while the corrosion-resistant aluminum construction ensures mechanical strength and longevity in harsh environmental conditions, including temperature extremes and moisture exposure. This product serves as a direct replacement for aging deadbreak elbows, offering improved longevity and reduced failure rates compared to older designs. How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded and submersible high voltage cable connections. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation to prevent serious or fatal injury.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Crimping tool (for compression lug), Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

K655/K675LR Elbow Connector, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Lubricant (silicone based), Threaded Stud (if mating part not equipped), Wire (No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent for grounding), Suitable connector (for grounding), Protective caps (HV insulated)

  1. Prepare the Cable and Work Area

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Refer to specific instructions for 20MA/21MA grounding devices, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seals, or UNISHIELD*/LEAD SHEATH cables requiring a 10TL adapter for outer jacket removal, shield connection, and grounding.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Cable Adapter

Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the provided diagrams for your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed shield, flat metallic tape, fabric tape, or longitudinally corrugated shield). Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Compression Lug

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of the exposed conductor should be between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm); otherwise, redo the assembly. For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 6-3/8 inches). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be between 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.

  4. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; if not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  5. Connect Elbow to Mating Part

Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  6. Connect Opposite Mating Part (if applicable)

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part. CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per instructions.

  7. Install Insulating Plug and Ground Cable Shield

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing down hard until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; ground it according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or through an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  8. Perform Voltage Test

The ELASTIMOLD® deadbreak elbow connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point. To test for voltage: 1. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. 2. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. 3. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
