How to Install K655/K675DLR Direct Test Elbow Connectors
This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe installation, cable preparation, and connection of K655/K675DLR Direct Test Elbow Connectors for high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick tool (for direct test port cap removal/installation)
Supplies needed:
K655/K675DLR Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack, Vinyl plastic tape (if applicable), Tape retainer (if applicable), Tape marker (if applicable), Ground wire (No. 14 AWG copper min.), Suitable ground connector, Waterproofing material (optional), Mating apparatus/connector
- Prepare for Installation and De-energize Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Gather all required tools and supplies, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Read all instructions thoroughly before starting. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury.
- Position and Prepare Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for future elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires. Remove the cable's outer jacket, shield, and semi-con shield according to the specific cable type and dimensions provided in the documentation (e.g., 12-3/4” for outer jacket, 9-3/4” to 10-3/4” for shields). Install any necessary tape markers or retainers. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.
- Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8” (111mm) to 4-11/16” (119mm).
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 6-1/2” (165mm). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions, ensuring the first crimp is on the end opposite the cable adapter. Wipe off all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-1/2” to 7-1/4” (165mm – 184mm).
- Install Elbow and Connect to Mating Part
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further, ensuring the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury.
- Complete Connections and Ground Cable Shield
If connecting another mating part to the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its inner surface, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, hand tighten, and then torque according to its instructions. If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Direct Voltage Test (Optional)
If a direct voltage test is required, use only the appropriate direct voltage test port adapter and meter (e.g., 200TC-1, 200TC-2, 200TC-4). Refer to the separate operating instructions for the test port adapter and voltage meter/indicator for safe and accurate testing procedures. DANGER: Insertion of any object, other than the appropriate direct voltage test port adapter and meter, into the direct test port or in close proximity to it can result in electric shock which will cause serious or fatal injury.
