How to Install/Replace the K650SL-CS1887 Sacrificial Cap and K650SLGB Grounding Rod
This guide provides instructions for safely replacing the K650SL-CS1887 sacrificial cap and optionally installing the K650SLGB grounding rod. It covers de-energization, removal, installation, and grounding procedures for high voltage electrical equipment.

Tools needed:
Cutting or spiking tool, Hex Wrench, Hot line clamp (bar or ball type)
Supplies needed:
New K650SL-CS1887 Sacrificial Cap, Lubricant (supplied), K650SLGB Grounding Rod (optional), 4/0 grounding cable, 14 AWG gage wire
- De-energize and Confirm Circuit Status
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Install a cutting or spiking tool on the existing sacrificial cap and cut or spike the cap on the line to confirm the circuit is de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This procedure should only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Remove the Old Sacrificial Cap
Remove the ground wire from the old sacrificial cap. Rotate the cut or spiked cap counterclockwise to remove it from the male interface. Discard the old cap safely.
- Install the K650SLGB Grounding Rod (Optional)
If installing a K650SLGB grounding rod, thread it onto the sacrificial male interface. Tighten the grounding rod using the supplied hex wrench until the wrench twists, indicating a torque of 75/110 in/lbs. If not installing a grounding rod, proceed to Step 5.
- Attach Grounding Cable to Rod (Optional)
If a grounding rod was installed, attach either a bar or ball type hot line clamp with a 4/0 grounding cable to the grounding rod. Ensure not to loosen the rod when tightening the clamp. Attach the opposite end of the 4/0 grounding cable to the system ground. This grounding setup should remain in place until repairs are completed.
- Inspect, Clean, and Lubricate the Interface
Inspect the sacrificial male interface for any distortion caused by high fault current; if distorted, the Buss Bar must be replaced. Clean the male interface thoroughly. Apply the supplied lubricant to both the male interface and the inside of the new sacrificial cap.
- Install the New Sacrificial Cap
Install the new sacrificial cap by rotating it clockwise 9 to 10 turns until it stops turning. No additional torque is required. Verify that the gap between the new cap and the shoulder of the splice is 1/8 inch or less around the entire cap.
- Attach Grounding Wire to New Cap
Attach a 14 AWG gage wire through the grounding eye of the new cap and tighten it by twisting. Connect the other end of this wire directly to the system ground.
