How to Install the K650-J2 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K650-J2 Deadbreak Junction using the universal mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, and grounding procedures for sectionalizing or tapping high voltage electrical equipment. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Marking tool, Wire strippers, Voltage detector

Supplies needed:

Suitable fasteners (for mounting to surface), Mounting hardware prepack (as included with junction), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, Insulated caps (for unused bushings)

  1. Mark mounting locations

First, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark all four slot locations for the universal brackets.

  2. Mount two universal brackets

Securely attach two universal brackets to the marked slot locations on the flat surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them firmly to prevent any movement during operation.

  3. Assemble remaining universal brackets

Connect the remaining two universal brackets to the previously mounted brackets at the desired angle using the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten all hardware securely.

  4. Attach junction to base assembly

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the base bracket assembly. Tighten securely.

  5. Mount junction assembly

Securely attach the entire deadbreak junction assembly to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position before tightening all hardware securely.

  6. Ground the junction assembly

Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. Connect a suitable grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket. Ensure a secure and reliable ground connection.

  7. Prepare operating interfaces

Before energizing, remove all protective shipping caps and thoroughly clean the operating interfaces. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. If any operating interfaces are not utilized, install appropriate insulated caps on the unused bushings. Do not use shipping caps for this purpose.
