How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing cables, assembling, and connecting the K151SP Straight Plug to solid dielectric type cables and mating Elastimold products for 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire cutting tool, Wire stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes Conductor Contact, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant, Crimp Chart), Bailing arrangement (required for mating Elastimold deadbreak products), Silicone grease, #14 AWG copper wire (customer supplied, if no Elastimold grounding device is used)

  1. Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove 8 inches of cable jacket from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for connecting to a ground point. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove 7-1/2 inches of cable jacket and 6-1/2 inches of copper tape shield from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific installation instructions regarding outer jacket cut back.

  2. Prepare the Conductor and Crimp the Socket Terminal

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately, then insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the supplied crimp chart. Start the crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  3. Prepare Insulation and Clean Cable

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket, and thoroughly clean the insulation with a rag wet with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install the device now following its appropriate installation instructions.

  4. Lubricate and Install Plug onto Cable

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing; do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product. Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  5. Connect to Mating Receptacle and Ground

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4). If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then, connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
