How to Install the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug, designed to permanently connect solid dielectric type cables by mating with the K151LSR receptacle on 15kV or 25kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Measuring device (ruler), Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Plastic Pin (part of contact, removed during installation), Silicone grease, #14AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied), Sealing material (for grounding connections)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare for Installation
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Check the package contents for completeness and damage, and verify all components fit the cable and mating products. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral/Shield
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, allowing sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 1-1/8 inches of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid or larger aluminum cable, remove 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately before inserting them into the crimp barrel.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Insert the bared conductor fully into the crimp barrel, ensuring it remains seated. Crimp the socket terminal, starting at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotating each successive crimp or indent at least 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Replace the plastic pin. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Housing
Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the product documentation and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Plug on Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Once the cable is fully inserted, remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the rod is not cut while mating parts. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible until the contact assembly 'clicks' and locks into its final position.
- Verify Connection and Remove Nylon Rod
Verify the locking contact by pulling on the cables; do not pull the housing. If the parts separate, repeat steps 8B and 8C. Once the connection is verified as secure, pull out and remove the nylon rod.
- Connect Grounding
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
