How to Install the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151LSP Non-Separable Straight Plug, designed to permanently connect solid dielectric type cables by mating with the K151LSR receptacle. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag, Approved solvent, Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
K151LSP Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Crimp Chart (supplied with product), K151LSR mating receptacle, Silicone grease, #14AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied), Sealing material (for grounding wires)
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are allowed for connecting to the ground point. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket a distance of 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield a distance of 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific installation instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 1-1/8 inches of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid or larger aluminum cable, remove 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; DO NOT PENCIL the insulation. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated in the connector. Refer to the crimp chart packed with the contact for specific instructions. Start the crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent at least 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Insulation and Clean
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Replace the plastic pin. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its appropriate instructions.
- Apply Lubricant
Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as indicated in the product diagram and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Plug onto Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches). Exercise care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts, which could leave material inside the interface. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible until you feel the contact assembly 'CLICK' and lock into its final position.
- Verify Connection and Remove Rod
Verify the locking contact by pulling on the cables; DO NOT PULL THE HOUSING. If the parts separate, repeat steps 7B and 7C. Pull out the nylon rod.
- Connect Grounding (if applicable)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
