How to Install the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, covering cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to mating products. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor contact (male), Nylon venting rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp chart, Approved solvent, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Sealing material (for grounding)

  1. De-energize and Prepare Cable Jacket

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation. Cut and remove the cable jacket: 8 inches for jacketed concentric neutral cables, or 7 1/2 inches for copper tape shield cables. For copper tape shield, remove the tape 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Allow sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding as required by the installation.

  2. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor. Cut the cable squarely; do not pencil the cut.

  3. Crimp Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring it remains fully seated in the connector. Refer to the crimp chart for specific instructions. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches from the pin end with a straight, smooth, squared cut; avoid cutting or nicking the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. Install an ECS or MA grounding device if applicable, following its instructions.

  5. Lubricate Receptacle and Cable

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do NOT substitute lubricants, as other types may be harmful to this product or its mating product.

  6. Insert Cable into Receptacle Housing

Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. IMPORTANT: If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover. Note that the shipping cover only offers protection from dirt and is NOT an insulating device; obtain an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) if an insulating device is required.

  7. Connect to Mating Plug

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an Elastimold bail.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then, connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
