How to Install a 15/25/35kV Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a 15/25/35kV, 600/900 Ampere Deadbreak Junction using the universal mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, grounding, and initial preparation. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire strippers, Marking tool

Supplies needed:

Deadbreak Junction, Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting Hardware Prepack (screws, washers, nuts), Suitable fasteners (user supplied), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Determine Mounting Location and Mark Slots

Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark the slot locations. Ensure the mounting surface is flat and suitable for the installation.

  2. Attach Initial Universal Brackets

Attach two universal brackets to the flat surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to prevent movement during operation. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation to prevent serious injury.

  3. Attach Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle using the supplied hardware (3/8” Hex Head Cap Screw, Ext. Tooth Lock Washer, 3/8” Hex Nut). Tighten securely.

  4. Assemble Deadbreak Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate using two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts. Attach them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly and tighten securely.

  5. Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets

Attach the assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets using the supplied hardware (1/2” Split Lock Washer, 1/2” Hex Nut, 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screw). Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten securely.

  6. Ground the Assembly

Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose, accommodating wire sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded. Verify proper grounding before proceeding to the next steps.

  7. Prepare Operating Interfaces

Remove all protective shipping caps and clean the operating interfaces. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating parts. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts.

  8. Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings

If not all operating interfaces are utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors on the unused bushing(s) before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function as they are not insulated. DANGER: Ensure all deadbreak connectors are de-energized before operating.
