How to Install a J4 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a J4 series deadbreak junction using the universal mount method, including mounting, assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench/Socket Set (for 3/8" and 1/2" hex head fasteners), Marking tool, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
J4 Deadbreak Junction (e.g., J4-6666-15-R), Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting Hardware Prepack (includes 3/8” Hex Head Cap Screw, Ext. Tooth Lock Washer, 3/8” Hex Nut, 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screw, 1/2” Split Lock Washer, 1/2” Hex Nut), Suitable fasteners (for attaching universal brackets to mounting surface, user-supplied), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (if not all interfaces are used)
- Prepare for Installation and Mark Mounting Location
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Using the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface and mark all slot locations.
- Attach Initial Universal Brackets to Surface
Attach two (2) universal brackets to the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten securely to ensure no movement during operation.
- Connect Remaining Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two (2) universal brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten securely.
- Assemble Deadbreak Junction to Base Bracket and Plate
Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two (2) 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.
- Mount Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Tighten securely. Ensure the parking stand is in an upright position.
- Ground the Assembly
Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose, accommodating wire sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces
Remove all protective shipping caps and clean the operating interfaces. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant; do not substitute, as other lubricants may be harmful. If not all operating interfaces are utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on the unused bushings before energization. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function as they are not insulated.
