How to Install a Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a two-, three-, or four-point deadbreak junction using the universal mount method, including mounting, assembly, and grounding procedures for models like J4-6226-15-R.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench or Socket Set, Marking Tool, Wire Strippers
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Junction (2-, 3-, or 4-point), Base Bracket, Base Plate, 4 Universal Brackets, Suitable fasteners (user supplied), 3/8” Hex Head Cap Screws, External Tooth Lock Washers (3/8”), 3/8” Hex Nuts, 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screws, 1/2” Split Lock Washers, 1/2” Hex Nuts, Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), HV insulated caps (for unused bushings), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant
- De-energize and Inspect
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Determine Mounting Location and Mark Slots
Select the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark the slot locations for drilling or fastener placement.
- Attach Initial Universal Brackets
Secure two (2) universal brackets to the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to prevent any movement during operation.
- Attach Remaining Universal Brackets
Connect the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at your desired angle. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten securely.
- Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate
Attach the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two (2) 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts through the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.
- Mount Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Secure the assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all hardware securely.
- Ground the Junction Assembly
Connect a grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket. Ensure the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket are properly grounded.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces
Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces. Clean each interface thoroughly and lubricate them with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s).
- Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings
If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors on any unused bushing(s) before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function as they are not insulated.
