How to Install a Deadbreak Junction with Universal Mount

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a two-, three-, or four-point deadbreak junction (J3-266-35) using the universal mount method, including initial setup, grounding, and preparing operating interfaces. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench set, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Suitable fasteners (for mounting brackets to surface), 3/8" Hex Head Cap Screws, 3/8" Ext. Tooth Lock Washers, 3/8" Hex Nuts, 1/2" Hex Head Cap Screws, 1/2" Split Lock Washers, 1/2" Hex Nuts, Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (for unused bushings)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Determine Location

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark all slot locations for drilling or fastener placement.

  2. Attach First Universal Brackets to Surface

Attach two universal brackets to the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten these fasteners securely to ensure there is no movement of the brackets during operation.

  3. Attach Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface. Position them at the desired angle using the supplied hardware, which includes 3/8” Hex Head Cap Screws, External Tooth Lock Washers, and 3/8” Hex Nuts. Tighten securely.

  4. Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Plate

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten all components securely.

  5. Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets

Attach the fully assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets that are mounted on the surface. Use the supplied hardware, including 1/2” Split Lock Washers, 1/2” Hex Nuts, and 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screws. Tighten securely and ensure the parking stand is in the upright position.

  6. Ground the Assembly

Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose. Connect a grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to this lug and ensure a secure, low-resistance connection to earth ground.

  7. Prepare Operating Interfaces

Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces of the deadbreak junction. Clean each interface thoroughly and lubricate with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do NOT substitute with other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating components.

  8. Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings

If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on any unused bushing(s) before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this function, as they are not insulated and are only for keeping interfaces clean during handling.
