How to Install the J3-226-35 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the J3-226-35 deadbreak junction using the universal mount configuration. It covers mounting, assembly, and grounding procedures for safe operation, emphasizing de-energization before work.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench set (for 3/8" and 1/2" hex nuts/screws), Wire strippers, Marking tool, Drill

Supplies needed:

Suitable fasteners (for mounting brackets to surface), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (if not all interfaces are used)

  1. Prepare Mounting Surface and Mark Locations

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Ensure the mounting surface is de-energized and safe for work. Using the base plate as a template, position it at the desired junction location and mark all four slot locations for the universal brackets.

  2. Install Initial Universal Brackets

Secure two universal brackets to the marked slot locations on the mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to prevent any movement during operation.

  3. Assemble Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten all hardware securely.

  4. Attach Junction to Base Assembly

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.

  5. Mount Junction Assembly to Brackets

Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly (with base bracket and base plate) to the universal brackets previously installed on the surface. Use the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all hardware securely.

  6. Ground the Junction Assembly

Connect a grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket. Ensure the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket are properly grounded according to local and national electrical codes.

  7. Prepare for Operation

Remove all protective shipping caps and clean the operating interfaces. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. If any operating interfaces are not utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps before energization. Do not use shipping caps for this purpose.
