How to Install J2, J3, or J4 Deadbreak Junctions (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 15/25/35kV, 600/900 Ampere two-, three-, or four-point deadbreak junctions using the universal mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, grounding, and initial preparation for operation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench (for hex nuts and cap screws), Wire strippers, Marking tool, Drill
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Junction (J2, J3, or J4), Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting Hardware Prepack (includes various hex head cap screws, lock washers, hex nuts), Suitable fasteners (for mounting brackets to surface, user-supplied), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded, user-supplied), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated cap(s) (for unused bushings)
- Safety First: De-energize and Prepare
Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or death. Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark the slot locations for drilling.
- Attach Initial Universal Brackets
Secure two universal brackets to the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to prevent any movement during operation.
- Attach Remaining Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle using the supplied hardware (3/8” Hex Head Cap Screw, Ext. Tooth Lock Washer, 3/8” Hex Nut). Tighten securely.
- Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate
Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.
- Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets using the supplied hardware (1/2” Split Lock Washer, 1/2” Hex Nut, 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screw). Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all connections securely.
- Ground the Assembly
Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket, accommodating wire sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded. Connect a suitable grounding wire and ensure a secure connection.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces
Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces and clean them thoroughly. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do not substitute with other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating product(s).
- Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings
If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on the unused bushings before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this purpose, as they are not insulated and are only intended to keep interfaces clean during handling and installation.
