How to Install the FPT4-8C-C Poke-Through
Installation guide for mounting and wiring the FPT4-8C-C poke-through fitting.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Drill, Core drill bit (4-inch diameter), Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Pliers
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts FPT4 series cover, Conduit fittings (if applicable), Electrical tape, Wire connectors, EMT compression fitting (for City of Chicago), Chicago Approved Junction Box (for City of Chicago)
- Determine Layout and Location
Plan the placement of the poke-through, ensuring it is at least 24 inches from other devices and at least 4-1/4 inches from any wall or pillar. Refer to spacing note 5 under "Important Notes Section".
- Drill Hole in Floor
If applicable, cut through the finished floor covering (carpet, wood, tile, linoleum) using the template provided with the cover instructions. Core drill a 4-inch diameter hole in the concrete floor. The actual hole size may be up to 4-1/16 inches.
- Assemble Base Unit
Verify the orientation of receptacles and communication outlets. Insert the base unit into the drilled hole and push down until the temporary cover screws contact the concrete floor. If flexible conduit is used, electrical connections may be made before inserting the base unit, except for City of Chicago installations.
- Assemble Cover
Remove the temporary cover. Install the FPT4 series cover according to the instructions provided with the cover. Once the cover is screwed to the poke-through, close the lid and step on the cover to fully seat it to the floor.
- Make Electrical Connections
WARNING: Ensure power is OFF before making any electrical connections. Remove the cover from the junction box. Attach conduit and make wiring connections as required by national and local electrical codes. Connect receptacle conductor leads to the branch circuit conductors according to the wiring diagram. Ensure the ground screw in the junction box is connected to the system ground. For City of Chicago installations, use an EMT compression fitting and a Chicago Approved Junction Box, and make electrical connections after the poke-through is installed and the cover is on.
- Apply Isolated Ground Labels (If Applicable)
If the circuit is connected to an isolated ground, apply the IG label (orange triangle) on the side of the receptacle as shown in the diagram. Refer to NEC 250-146 (D).
- Connect Communication Cables
Install communication cables and jacks after the cover is installed. For City of Chicago installations, remove the bottom communication hub to route the cable into the conduit, then re-attach the hub. The hub provides a threaded NPS connection for EMT conduit.
