How to Verify Calibration and Gaging of the ERG4001 Compression Tool

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for performing visual inspection, calibrating the SHURE STAKE® mechanism, and verifying the gaging of the ERG4001 compression tool to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

SAE No. 20 motor oil, Force gauge (for 27-37 lbs), Gage pins (specific to ERG4001 nests)

  1. Perform Visual Inspection

Inspect the ERG4001 tool for any cracks, sharp edges, or other obvious imperfections that could affect its performance. Ensure the die nest area is completely free of burrs, dents, or scratches.

  2. Lubricate and Verify SHURE STAKE® Mechanism Release Force

Apply a thin, protective coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces of the tool, avoiding excessive oiling. Squeeze the handles until the jaws are fully closed, but before the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases. Gradually apply a force at 1-1/2 inches from the end of the handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases. The force required should be between 27 lbs minimum and 37 lbs maximum. If the SHURE STAKE® mechanism needs to be released manually, push up on the release bar until the ratchet teeth are disengaged. WARNING: HANDLES ARE NON-INSULATING. DO NOT CRIMP ON HOT ENERGIZED WIRES. WARNING: KEEP ALL BODY PARTS AWAY FROM DIE NEST DURING GAGING OR CRIMPING PROCEDURE.

  3. Conduct Die Nest Gaging Verification

Before gaging, thoroughly wipe the die nest clean. Swing the locator away from the nests, as gage pins will be inserted from this side. Close the tool handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism just trips. Using appropriate gage pins, verify that each nest (RED, BLUE, YELLOW) meets the specific gaging requirements for the ERG4001 as listed in Table 1 (RED: .100-.103, BLUE: .117-.120, YELLOW: .149-.152). WARNING: KEEP ALL BODY PARTS AWAY FROM DIE NEST DURING GAGING OR CRIMPING PROCEDURE.

  4. Address Verification Failures

If the ERG4001 tool fails any of the visual inspection, calibration, or gaging verification tests, do not attempt to repair or adjust it yourself. Immediately contact the nearest Thomas & Betts tool service center to arrange for professional repair service.
