Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Battery connectors, Heat shrink insulation tubing, KOPR-SHIELD compound, Torque wrench
- Disconnect battery cables
Before starting the installation, disconnect the battery cables from the battery posts. Note the location of the positive and negative terminals for correct reinstallation.
- Prepare the battery cables
Carefully strip the insulation from the battery cables without nicking the strands. Ensure that the conductor strands are clean and free of dirt.
- Select and attach connectors
Choose the appropriate connector based on the gauge of the battery cable. Insert the stripped end of the cable into the connector until it bottoms out, then use the crimping tool to compress the connector according to the specified compression points.
- Apply heat shrink insulation
If using heat shrink insulation, position it over the barrel of the connector, ensuring it overlaps the wire insulation by at least 1.5 inches. Apply heat until the insulation shrinks, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Install battery connectors
Connect the positive lead to the positive battery terminal and the negative lead to the negative terminal. Use a torque wrench to apply a torque of 10 to 15 ft-lbs to ensure proper installation.
