How to Install the ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice on ACSR, AAAC, and AAC conductors, ensuring a reliable connection.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Bristle wire brush
Supplies needed:
ATS wide range splice, Tape or marking device, Non-gritted oxide-inhibitor compound, Aluminum conductor cleaner (for ACSR)
- Disconnect Power and Select Splice
WARNING: RISK OF SHOCK, DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE INSTALLATION. Ensure all power to the conductor is disconnected before proceeding. Select the proper ATS wide range automatic tension splice for the job. Verify the wire size and type are clearly marked on the splice and match your conductor. The ATS splice is recommended for ACSR, AAAC, and AAC conductors and is color-coded for its conductor size range. Keep the splice in its plastic bag until installation to keep internal parts free from dirt.
- Prepare Conductor Ends
Straighten the conductor to remove any curvature. For old conductors, cut back sufficiently to remove stretches, burned, or annealed strands. Cut the conductor square so that all strands are even, in lay, and free of burrs.
- Mark Conductor for Full Insertion
Measure the conductor for full insertion, which is one half the length of the splice. Mark this insertion distance clearly with tape or another suitable device.
- Clean Conductor Ends and Apply Inhibitor
Thoroughly wire brush the end section of the conductor with a bristle wire brush. For ACSR conductors only, deeply clean the portion of the stranding to be inserted with a good quality aluminum conductor cleaner. Apply a coat of non-gritted oxide-inhibitor compound, such as Blackburn® CTB, and wipe off any excess. Wire brush the inhibitor-coated conductor once again to ensure all oxides have been removed and the inhibitor reaches between the strands.
- Insert Conductor into Splice
Do not remove the plastic strand guide or internal pilot cup from the splice, as these components confine and guide the conductor strands. Insert the prepared conductor into the splice with a smooth, straight thrust through the jaws until the conductor hits the center stop. DO NOT TWIST the conductor during insertion. The insertion must be accomplished with one continuous thrust; do not push partially, pause, and then continue. Check your insertion markers to ensure full insertion. If insertion is not complete, the conductor will not be gripped properly and will pull out easily.
- Apply Hand Set Tension
Before releasing any blocks or tensioning equipment, apply a momentary "hand set" tension to the conductor to assure proper jaw gripping within the splice. As tension is applied, the conductor will normally move 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the end of the splice due to the sliding action of the gripping jaws. DO NOT TAP THE SPLICE TO SET JAWS.
