How to Install ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing conductors and installing the ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice for ACSR, AAAC, and AAC conductors, ensuring a secure and reliable connection.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Bristle wire brush

Supplies needed:

ATS wide range splice, Tape or marking device, Aluminum conductor cleaner (for ACSR), Non-gritted oxide-inhibitor compound

  1. Disconnect Power

WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock.

  2. Select Proper Splice

Select the correct automatic ATS wide range splice for the job. Verify the wire size and type marked on the splice match your conductor (ACSR, AAAC, or AAC).

  3. Straighten Conductor

Straighten the conductor to remove any curvature before proceeding with further preparation.

  4. Cut Back Old Conductors

If using old conductors, cut them back sufficiently to remove any stretches, burned, or annealed strands.

  5. Cut Conductor Square

Cut the conductor square so that all strands are even, in lay, and free of any burrs.

  6. Mark Insertion Distance

Measure the conductor for full insertion (one half the length of the splice) and mark this distance clearly with tape or another suitable device.

  7. Wire Brush End Section

Thoroughly wire brush the end section of the conductor using a bristle wire brush (e.g., T&B Cat. No. WWB1).

  8. Clean ACSR Conductor (If Applicable)

For ACSR conductors only, thoroughly clean the portion of the stranding to be inserted into the automatic connector with a good quality aluminum conductor cleaner.

  9. Apply Oxide-Inhibitor

Apply a coat of non-gritted compound, such as Blackburn® CTB oxide-inhibitor, to the cleaned conductor end, then wipe off any excess.

  10. Re-brush Inhibitor-Coated Conductor

Wire brush the inhibitor-coated conductor once again to ensure all oxides have been removed and the inhibitor reaches between the strands.

  11. Maintain Splice Cleanliness

Keep the ATS splice in its plastic bag until the moment of installation to ensure internal parts remain free from dirt and contamination.

  12. Do Not Remove Internal Components

Do not remove the plastic strand guide or internal pilot cup from the splice. These components are designed to confine and guide the conductor strands for easy insertion.

  13. Insert Conductor into Splice

Insert the conductor into the splice with a smooth, straight, continuous thrust through the jaws until the conductor hits the center stop. Do not twist the conductor, and avoid pushing partially, pausing, and then continuing.

  14. Verify Full Insertion

Check the tape marker to confirm full insertion. If insertion is not complete, the conductor will not be gripped properly and may pull out easily.

  15. Apply Hand Set Tension

Before releasing any blocks, apply a momentary 'hand set' tension to the conductor to ensure proper jaw gripping. The conductor will normally move 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the end of the splice due to jaw sliding action. Do not tap the splice to set the jaws. A tension representing a minimum of 15% of the rated strength of the conductor is recommended for a permanent low resistance electrical connection.
