This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splices on ACSR, AAAC, and AAC conductors, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Bristle wire brush
Supplies needed:
ATS wide range automatic tension splice, Tape or marking device, Aluminum conductor cleaner (for ACSR), Non-gritted oxide-inhibitor compound
- Ensure Safety and Select Splice
WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to avoid risk of shock. Select the proper ATS wide range automatic tension splice for the job, verifying the wire size and type clearly marked on the splice. Keep the splice in its plastic bag to prevent dirt contamination until installation.
- Prepare Conductor Ends
Straighten the conductor to remove any curvature. For old conductors, cut back sufficiently to remove stretches, burned, or annealed strands. Cut the conductor square so all strands are even, in lay, and free of burrs. Measure the conductor for full insertion (one half the length of the splice) and mark it with tape or another device. Thoroughly wire brush the end section. For ACSR conductors, thoroughly clean the portion to be inserted with a good quality aluminum conductor cleaner. Apply a coat of non-gritted oxide-inhibitor compound, wipe off excess, then wire brush again to ensure oxides are removed and inhibitor reaches between strands.
- Insert Conductor into Splice
Do not remove the plastic strand guide or internal pilot cup from the splice; these components guide the conductor strands. Insert the conductor into the splice with a smooth, straight, continuous thrust through the jaws until it hits the center stop. DO NOT TWIST. Do not push the conductor partially in, pause, and then continue; insertion must be accomplished with one continuous thrust. Check the markers to confirm full insertion. If insertion is incomplete, the conductor will not be gripped and will pull out easily.
- Set the Splice Gripping Jaws
Before releasing blocks, apply a momentary “hand set” tension to assure proper jaw gripping. As tension is applied, the conductor will move 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the end of the splice due to the sliding action of the gripping jaws; this is normal. DO NOT TAP THE SPLICE TO SET JAWS.
