How to Install the ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice
A comprehensive guide for the proper installation of the ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice for ACSR, AAAC, and AAC conductors, ensuring a secure and reliable connection. WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to prevent risk of shock.
Tools needed:
Wire brush
Supplies needed:
ATS Wide Range Automatic Tension Splice, Tape or marking device, Non-gritted oxide-inhibitor, Aluminum conductor cleaner (for ACSR conductors)
- Prepare the Conductor
Select the appropriate ATS wide range automatic tension splice based on wire size and type, which is clearly marked on the splice. Straighten the conductor to remove any curvature. Cut back old conductors sufficiently to remove stretches, burned, or annealed strands, ensuring the cut is square so all strands are even, in lay, and free of burrs. Measure the conductor for full insertion (one half the length of the splice) and mark it with tape or another device. Thoroughly wire brush the end section. For ACSR conductors only, thoroughly clean the portion to be inserted with a good quality aluminum conductor cleaner. Apply a coat of non-gritted oxide-inhibitor, wipe off excess, and then wire brush the inhibitor-coated conductor once again to assure all oxides have been removed and inhibitor reaches between the strands.
- Insert the Conductor into the Splice
Do not remove the plastic strand guide or internal pilot cup from the splice, as these components confine and guide the conductor strands for easy insertion. Insert the prepared conductor into the splice with a smooth, straight, continuous thrust through the jaws until the conductor hits the center stop. Do not twist the conductor during insertion, and avoid pushing partially, pausing, and then continuing. Check the marked insertion distance to confirm the conductor is fully seated; if insertion is not complete, the conductor will not be gripped and will pull out easily.
- Set the Splice Jaws
Before releasing any blocks or tensioning devices, apply a momentary “hand set” tension to the conductor to assure proper jaw gripping within the splice. It is normal for the conductor to move 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from the end of the splice due to the sliding action of the gripping jaws as tension is applied. Do not tap the splice to set the jaws.
