ASP AL9CU Aluminum Compression Splice, Aluminum or Copper Cable
- Disconnect Power and Verify Cable Size
WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of electric shock. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum splice matches the actual cable size to be used for the connection.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the cable, taking care not to nick or damage the cable strands during the process.
- Wire Brush the Cable
Thoroughly wire brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector to ensure a clean contact surface. Refer to ABB catalog number WWB1 for recommended wire brush.
- Insert Cable into Connector
Fully insert the prepared cable into the compression splice connector. WARNING: Do not remove the oxide inhibitor from the splice barrel, as insufficient compound can result in an unsafe connection. This compound contains petroleum distillates and small metal particles; avoid prolonged skin contact.
- Crimp the Connector
Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' in the product documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times according to the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean Excess Inhibitor
Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor compound from the exterior of the crimped splice.
