How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating products. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), Cleaning cloths
Supplies needed:
756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if used), Lubricant (silicone), Threaded stud, Tape marker, Wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper) for grounding, Mating product (e.g., apparatus bushing, connector plug), Grounding device (optional), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).
- Prepare Cable End
Prepare the cable according to its type (Unishield, Lead Sheath, Jacketed, or Non-Jacketed). Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable insulation and semi-con shield to the dimensions specified in the documentation, applying a tape marker as indicated.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper, fully insert conductor into lug. For aluminum, wire brush and immediately insert. Measure 'Check Dimension' (<7in/178mm) before crimping; redo if not met. Crimp lug per instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor. Verify post-crimp distance from lug end to cable adapter is 6-7/8in to 7-5/8in (175mm-194mm); redo if not met.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Part for Connection
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (if supplied with elbow) into the mating part if it's not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Second Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Voltage Detection Cap
If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.
- Ground Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded either via a grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
If the connector has an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap and replace it.
