How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible deadfront cable connections on 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Torque wrench, Cleaning supplies
Supplies needed:
756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Grounding connector, Silicone lubricant, Tape marker
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage, and verify component compatibility with the cable and mating products. Read all instructions thoroughly before proceeding.
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).
- Prepare Cable End
Prepare the cable end by removing the outer jacket, semi-con shield, and cable insulation to the specified dimensions for your cable type. Refer to the provided diagrams for precise measurements (e.g., 10-3/8in, 11-3/8in, 13-5/8in from the cut end to tape markers) and techniques.
- Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Trim Conductor Insulation
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 7 inches/178mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe off all excess inhibitor. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm). Redo if dimensions are incorrect.
- Lubricate and Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (if supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it's not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to First Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Second Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Voltage Detection Cap
If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.
- Ground Cable Shield
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded, either via a grounding device or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test and Replace Cap
CAUTION: For 600amp L-Kits, ensure all components are tightened to specified torque. If using the integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
