How to Install 756LR/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR and 776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Cable stripping tool, Knife, Crimping tool, Hotstick, Torque wrench, Wire brush

Supplies needed:

756LR or 776LR Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG Copper or equivalent), Suitable ground connector, Cleaning supplies, Silicone lubricant

  1. De-energize and Inspect Components

De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Inspect all connector kit components for any damage, verify correct rating, and ensure compatibility with the cable and mating parts.

  2. Position and Clean Cable

Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack is available for easy removal of the elbows. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm).

  3. Prepare Cable End

Prepare the cable end according to its type (jacketed, non-jacketed, etc.) by removing the outer jacket (if applicable) and stripping the cable insulation and semi-con shield to the specified lengths (refer to product diagrams for precise measurements, typically around 10-3/8", 11-3/8", and 13-5/8" from the cut end). Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back.

  4. Install Cable Adapter

Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, onto the cable until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  5. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug

Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, taking care not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm); if not, redo the assembly. Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion). Crimp the lug following its supplied instructions, ensuring the "Check Dimension" is less than 7” (178mm) before crimping and the final distance from the lug end to the cable adapter is 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm). Wipe off all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface after crimping.

  6. Install Elbow

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition the cable adapter if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  7. Connect to Mating Apparatus

Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  8. Connect Opposite End (if applicable)

If connecting to another mating part on the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate this mating part. Insert it into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.

  9. Install Insulating Plug (if used)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of its voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps securely into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage; follow the voltage test directions carefully.

  10. Ground Cable Shield

Insert one end of a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or through an alternate method if no grounding device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.

  11. Perform Voltage Test

Using a hotstick, remove the test point cap by peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device specifically made for separable connectors with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can provide a false "no voltage" indication; treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
