How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 756LR and 776LR deadbreak elbow connectors. These connectors are designed for fully shielded, submersible cable connections to high voltage apparatus and for splicing/tapping 600-ampere or 900-ampere systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
756LR or 776LR Elbow Connector kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity), Suitable connector for grounding wire, Silicone lubricant
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Read the entire installation instructions and have all required tools at hand. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Jacket
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).
- Prepare Cable
Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to its specific type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, or longitudinally corrugated shield) as detailed in the product documentation. Ensure proper dimensions for cable insulation, semi-con shield, and tape markers.
- Bevel, Clean, Lubricate, and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Be careful not to cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Crimp Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (it should be less than 7 inches / 178mm). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. After crimping, the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter should be between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare and Connect to Mating Product (First End)
Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect to Mating Product (Opposite End)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Voltage Detection Cap (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. This plug provides a means for detecting system voltage.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded either via a grounding device or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation Check)
To test if the circuit is energized, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, specifically designed for capacitive test points on separable connectors, to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point. WARNING: Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury.
