How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors. These connectors provide fully shielded, fully submersible deadfront cable connections to high voltage apparatus and allow splicing/tapping of 600-ampere (756LR) or 900-ampere (776LR) systems, rated for 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Torque wrench, Suitable grounding connector
Supplies needed:
756/776LR Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Tape marker, Grounding device (e.g., 20MA, 21MA, 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, or equivalent), Silicone lubricant, Waterproofing material for cable jacket, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity) for grounding
- Prepare for Installation and Position Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. Position the cable in its final assembled location with sufficient slack. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean and Prepare Cable
Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm). Prepare the cable by removing the outer jacket and semi-con shield according to the specific cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, or longitudinally corrugated shield) to the specified dimensions (e.g., 10-3/8 inches, 11-3/8 inches, 13-5/8 inches).
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm). For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be less than 7 inches / 178mm). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. The distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm).
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it's not already equipped with one. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End and Torque
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part. CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per plug connector instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Ground Cable Shield
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of its voltage detection cap, then place it on the elbow, pushing down firmly until it snaps into place. CAUTION: The insulating plug provides a means for detecting system voltage. Ground the cable shield: Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop (do not damage the eye), and connect it to ground using a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield according to the instructions supplied with your grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device, designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
