Overview

The ABB 600 Series Deadbreak Elbow Kit (SKU: 755LR-L0250) is a fully shielded, dead-front cable termination solution designed for 35 kV class medium-voltage applications. This kit provides a reliable, submersible connection point for high-voltage apparatus in power distribution systems, including substations, industrial facilities, and utility networks. The elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.180 to 1.465 inches, making it compatible with a wide range of medium-voltage cables. Key specifications include a 600 Amp continuous current rating and a 35 kV voltage class, meeting ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements. The kit supports conductor sizes from 2/0 AWG to 250 kcmil compressed stranded aluminum or 3/0 AWG compacted solid aluminum, ensuring versatility for various cable configurations. The included aluminum compression lug delivers a low-resistance, secure connection, critical for maintaining system integrity under load. Constructed with 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials, the deadbreak elbow features a fully shielded, molded rubber housing that ensures long-term reliability and environmental resistance. The design allows for easy installation and disconnection using standard hand tools in a de-energized state, reducing downtime during maintenance or upgrades. Optional accessories enable visible external separation, bypass, isolation, dead-ending, grounding, and testing, as well as the addition of taps, surge arrestors, and fault current indicators for enhanced functionality. The 755LR-L0250 kit includes an insulated plug, cap, stud, lug, and cable adapter, providing a complete termination solution. With a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 21.1 kV and a phase-to-phase rating of 36.6 kV, this elbow connector is engineered to handle the demands of medium-voltage power systems. Its 150 kV BIL impulse withstand rating and 50 kV AC one-minute withstand ensure robust performance in high-stress environments. How to Install 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and setup of 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, crimping, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools (e.g., cable knife, insulation stripper, beveling tool), Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool (per lug instructions), Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test point), Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

755LR or 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper for grounding), Suitable connector (for grounding wire), Tape marker, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket, recommended), Mating product (e.g., apparatus bushing, elbow tap plug, connector plug)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Position Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Read all instructions completely. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Position the cable in its final assembled position, ensuring enough slack to remove elbows. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).

  2. Prepare Cable and Install Cable Adapter

Follow the appropriate cable preparation steps for your cable type (Non-jacketed concentric neutral, Jacketed shield wires, Jacketed flat metallic tape shield, Jacketed fabric tape shield, or Jacketed longitudinally corrugated shield) as detailed in the product documentation, removing the outer jacket and preparing the shield and insulation to the specified dimensions. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Compression Lug

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-3/8 inches to 4-3/4 inches (111mm-121mm); if not, redo the assembly. For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 7 inches (178mm). Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug, ensuring the first crimp is on the end. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm); if not, redo the assembly.

  4. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  5. Connect Elbow to Mating Products

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it is not already equipped with one. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. For the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate the mating part, then insert it into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing down hard until it snaps into place.

  6. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a piece of wire, with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper, through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop. Do not damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The shield of the cable must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device used, or through an alternate method if no device is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (Capacitive Test Point)

CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per plug connector instructions. The ELASTIMOLD deadbreak elbow connector has an integral capacitance test point to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is NOT directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
