How to Install 755LR/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 755LR and 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
755LR/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), High voltage cable (e.g., concentric neutral, jacketed), Mating high voltage apparatus (e.g., bushing, connector plug), Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable ground connector, Silicone lubricant (for capacitive test point cap)
- Prepare the Work Area and Cable
De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating components. Position the cable with enough slack to allow for elbow removal and cut it 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm).
- Prepare the Cable for Connection
Follow specific instructions for your cable type (e.g., Unishield, Jacketed, Non-Jacketed) to remove the outer jacket and semi-con shield to the specified dimensions. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation, ensuring it is even with the end of the cable adapter, without cutting or nicking the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm).
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; this dimension must be less than 7” (178mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the crimping instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm).
- Install the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug's hole with the stud. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow, then insert it into the elbow. Engage the threads, hand tighten, and then torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable) and Ground the System
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it firmly on the elbow until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a grounding wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop; do not damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to instructions provided with any grounding device or via an alternate method. It is recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
- Perform Voltage Test
CAUTION: When constructing 600amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to the specified torque per plug connector instructions. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
