How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug, an accessory for power distribution systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation and that only competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment perform this procedure.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

3/8” hex bit socket, Torque wrench, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Connecting Plug, Lubricant (supplied with plug, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher or elbow end module)

  1. Install the Stud (if applicable)

If the mating plug device is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Thread the stud in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.

  2. Clean and Lubricate Components

Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part. Lubricate both parts with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Ensure surfaces remain clean.

  3. Connect and Torque the Plug

Push the connecting plug into the elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module and engage the threads. Hold the contact of the connecting plug against the contact surface of the mating part. Use a 600ATM or a 3/8” hex bit socket with a torque wrench and tighten to 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.

  4. Install Additional Components (if required)

If your setup requires additional components, continue by installing additional elbow, bushing extender, or vault stretcher. Refer to the instructions packaged with those specific products for proper installation.

  5. Ground the Connecting Plug (if applicable)

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect the other end of the wire to ground.
